Uckfield Town Council is hosting a commemorative V-J Day 80th Anniversary service, centred around the Uckfield Beacon being lit in line with hundreds of beacons across the United Kingdom.
This service takes place on the evening of Friday 15th August, which marks exactly 80 years since Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces, effectively bringing an end to World War Two.
We welcome residents to join us in paying their respects to the servicemen and women who were part of World War Two in this service and lighting of the beacon.
The beacon site is at Victoria Pleasure Ground, where there is the capacity for residents to attend with camping chairs and picnic mats, should they wish.
Burgers, hot and cold refreshments and icecream will be available to purchase. No alcohol will be sold onsite.
The programme for the evening is as follows:
8.00pm to 8.30pm – Recorded music playing
8.30pm to 9.00pm – Live music performed by Rosie’s Retro Rhythms, finishing with the National Anthem
9.00pm – Town Crier’s Proclamation
9.05pm – Town Mayor’s reading
9.10pm – Prayers by The Rev. Father David Ashton
9.15pm – A tribute from Kathy Sambrook OBE DL, followed by the lighting of the beacon
The playing of the Last Post and two minutes of reflection.
We thank all participants for being part of the event, in addition to the Uckfield branch of the Royal British Legion, which has lent its support to the event.
